Brief Overview of a Grid Tie System – How It Works

Many of us have used solar-powered equipment, most notably the ubiquitous solar-powered calculator that operates without the use of batteries.

This technology can be simple, or can be so complex that it can operate an international space station. In the case of providing enough power to run a household, there are solar panels that can be attached to your roof to harness the rays from the sun. The question that many people have is how these rays are then converted into electrical power, with a seemingly endless renewable rate.

The solar panels are the most important portion of any solar energy system. They will produce direct current electricity by using the rays of the sun, and then it is run through the inverter and switched over to alternating current electricity. The AC power is the type that is used by the utility company’s own power grid, and can be fed directly into this grid tie system with the use of a combiner box. Those are, in essence, the main functions of this type of system.

This then went on to include a mechanical steam powered engine and eventually used this to run a refrigerator, harnessing the power of the sun and turning this into ice. Considered a breakthrough at the time, he was one of the first to think about the potential of this energy and how it could help conserve other resources.

However, the coal industry still won out and his research was cut short. The research was continued with the efforts of other scientists who built upon the refrigeration devices, such as William Adams, Willoughby Smith, and Charles Tellier, who was considered the father of refrigeration. In the 20th century, the work was continued by government organizations. In fact, the space programs during the great space race at the turn of the century used solar technology.

The event that pushed solar energy into the consciousness of the public at large was of course the energy crisis in the 1970′s, with great oil shortages. This pushed people to start thinking about how to find a very real salutation to the finite resources that we have been using as energy sources to run all the machinery of modern life.

It’s possible to install solar panels yourself at home or purchase them already pre-assembled. Before installing any sort of solar energy system, it’s helpful to evaluate if you are in the proper type of climate and have the right rooftop positioning capabilities to harness the power of the sun in an efficient manner.
