The Virginia Deck – Prepping your Outdoor Living Space for Winter
Is it the winter season again already? The year goes by all too quickly and unfortunately that means that you need to prepare your home for the cold months. One of the areas that needs the most attention (and it’s often skipped by homeowners) is the Virginia deck. If you forget about this space you’re bound to regret after just a few short years.
When you don’t properly care for your Virginia deck, the wood will wear away much faster and will show its age prematurely. That’s why it’s important to do an inspection before the leaves drop and the snow starts to fly. Once the season shifts too much it’ll be much more difficult to tackle the little projects.
Before you can do anything else, you need to remove all the common goods from your deck including the furniture. These should be placed into storage and your deck prepared for refinishing. Removing these items during the late fall and winter helps to prevent the buildup of debris and organic material. When organic material decays it can do a lot of damage to the surface of a deck.
If you’re able to do so, take a power washer or deck scrubber to your deck once you’ve cleaned off your day to day items and furniture. Cover the surface of the deck as you use a cleanser and the power washer in a consistent pattern from corner to corner. You may need to go over the deck twice to ensure that the bulk of the dirt and other debris is completely removed.
You’ll need to let your deck dry for 2-3 days before you can move on, but once the wood is dry you can invest in a resealer to put a finish touch to the surface of the deck. Keep an eye on the weather because you’ll want to make sure you’ve got clear skies; once the deck is sealed though you’ll be ready for winter.
Treating your deck doesn’t take a lot of work, but it does take some dedication to ensure that your house stays beautiful inside and out. The last thing you want to do after building a beautiful outdoor living space on your home is have to hire a Virginia deck installer to build you a new one because yours fell apart.
